Biography


Alfonsina Storni

-Born May 29, 1892 in Switzerland – October 25, 1938
-Latin American Poet during the Modernist period
-Began writing at age 11
-1907, joined a traveling theater company around Argentina
-Lived in Rosario, Argentina where she studied to be a teacher at Normal School in Coronda, and later worked for multiple magazines
-Family owned a café that failed, and led to poor living conditions for the family
-1911 à moved to Buenos Aries (big city = animosity) but experienced economic troubles
-1912 à first child was born, son Alejandro, to a married man
-Published her first book, La inquietud del rosal, in 1916
-Wrote about “imprisonment felt by women in relationships”
-1920, won the First Municipal Prize of Poetry and the Second National Prize of Literature for Languidness
-1935, diagnosed with breast cancer à suffered from depression, focused most of her writing on the sea
-Wrote her final poem, Voy a Dormir, and soon after committed suicide by drowning herself in the ocean
